Emergency Services

At Hollywood Smile Dental, our caring team understands how disconcerting a dental emergency can be, especially if you are in pain. That little twinge you felt a couple of weeks ago has now become a full-blown, excruciating toothache, and you are ready to drop everything to get relief.

And when you’re ready, we’re here for you. Dr. Yefim Khanimov knows that there’s nothing more important to you than receiving prompt attention. Whatever time of the day or night you have a serious problem, a member of our team is always available to answer your questions.

Same-Day Emergency Treatment

In the majority of cases, we can see you the same day. If your emergency occurs during business hours, we will make time for you in our schedule that day. And if it’s after hours, a member of our team is always on call to help.

Some of the same-day emergency treatments we can provide are:

  • Tooth-colored fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Tooth extractions
  • Dental bonding for chipped teeth

Tips for Handling Your Emergency

It can be challenging to think clearly when you have an emergency, so it’s a good idea to know what steps you can take for self-care until you can get to our office.

If you experience an injury to your face or jaw or excessive bleeding, please call 911 or get to an emergency room as quickly as possible.

Knocked Out (Avulsed) Tooth – This is the most serious of all dental emergencies and requires immediate attention, so please call us right away. The two most important steps are to handle the tooth by the crown only and keep the tooth root moist. You should put the tooth in a container of milk, water, or saliva until you get to our office.

Toothache – There’s no pain quite like the pain of a decayed or damaged tooth. You can find some temporary relief with over-the-counter pain relievers or applying an ice pack on and off your face at 20-minute intervals. But tooth pain is a sign that something serious is occurring and requires attention as soon as possible.

Lost crown or filling – If you lose a crown, wrap it in tissue until you get to our office. In many cases, a lost crown can be cemented back in place without any other treatment. A lost filling will need to be replaced, so please call us for an appointment so we can protect the tooth from damage.

Avoiding Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies happen to everyone, but you can minimize your risk for certain emergencies like toothaches or lost crowns. When we see you every six months, we can check for cavities and treat them before they cause you pain. During your checkups, we will also examine your crowns and fillings to make sure they are in good shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most surgery is straightforward, but the time immediately following your procedure is critical for successful healing.

We will provide you with full instructions for post-treatment care. Meanwhile, here are some things you’ll want to keep in mind:

  • Apply cold compresses every five to ten minutes on the surgical site to control the pain and swelling.
  • Stay on a soft food diet for four to five days after the surgery. Some examples of soft foods are mashed potatoes, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, and macaroni. After five days, you can start to ease your way back to your usual diet.
  • Avoid foods that are too spicy, too hot, or too cold.
  • Avoid spitting or creating any pressure inside your mouth as it may cause bleeding at the site of operation or extraction.
  • Avoid blowing your nose as it may create vacuum and pressure in your oral cavity and may cause bleeding.
  • If antibiotics are prescribed, make sure you take them as directed until they're gone. You should be able to find relief from discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers.

When to Call Us

Of course, you are always welcome to call us, but here are some instances where we want to be informed about what's going on:

  • In cases where the bleeding hasn't stopped for more than two hours, apply pressure at the site of bleeding by biting on gauze. If the bleeding is profuse, please call our office. If we are closed, visit the emergency room for help.
  • If you have fever or chills, please contact our office. If you feel dizzy or light-headed, please call 911. You may lay down and raise your feet above your head level to increase the blood flow to your upper body and head.
  • Some swelling is normal after a surgical procedure or tooth extraction. If the swelling spreads farther than the original site, please contact our office or visit the emergency room, especially if the swelling has moved past your jawline.

If you have stitches that have come out, please see us at our office at the earliest available time.
